Privacy Notice

We take your privacy very seriously. Please read this privacy notice carefully as it contains important information about how and why we collect, store, use and share personal data. It also explains our client's rights in relation to their personal data and how to contact us or the Office of the Information Commissioner in the event of a complaint.

We collect, use and are responsible for certain personal data which is information relating to an identified or identifiable individual's current address, emails, telephone numbers, and information to check or verify the identity of our clients based on the type of matter being handled.

When we collect data, we are subject to the Data Protection Act and its regulations.

Under data protection law, we can only use personal data if we have a proper reason, e.g.:

  • where a client has given consent.
  • to comply with our legal and regulatory obligations.
  • for the performance of a contract with a client or to take steps at a potential client's request before entering a contract; or
  • for our legitimate interests or those of a third party.

We collect client's data to meet our legal and regulatory obligations as attorneys-at-law, which require us to know our clients. We also collect data to perform contracts to provide legal services. Note that providing our services necessarily requires us to keep proper records of our clients including contact information to maintain communications with clients on the conduct of a legal matter.

We only share personal data to third parties where necessary. Such third parties include:

  • Our database service providers – including cloud services used to store our data
  • Limited data to the court (such as names and addresses) as required by the relevant court forms/documents.
  • Regulatory bodies to comply with our legal obligations.

The personal data of our clients is stored on our cloud databases as well as in our physical files and are subject to our retention policy which will see us holding information for the entire duration of the continuation of a client-attorney contract, and at least 8 years after the termination of the contract to defend any claim or to submit to regulatory bodies where required.

We do not use our website to track visitors. While it is generally understood that McLeod Scott Law has access to identifiable information such as visitor's IP addresses, it is our policy to not use or share such information. We will not make any attempts to use the information or make assumptions, identify and or make instruments to identify anyone who visit our website.
